Building Bridges

Founded by Marjan Vayghan during the Fall of 2004, Building Bridges is comprised of a growing Fine Arts Collective that continues to exhibit alternately amongst the alternative creative spaces of Tehran and Los Angeles. Building Bridges exhibits are informed by this context of movement and flexible citizenship across both geographical and cultural spaces, and the multiple realities these spaces engender. As border hoppers with a mission statement of Building Bridges across borders, we hold underground events across the Rooftops of Tehran and Los Angeles. Our projects are an effort to bridge these diverse communities into a space of creativity and understanding, by employing the arena of creativity and expression through the arts. Building Bridges is an effort to create solidarity and cross cultural understanding. Building Bridges challenges oppression across borders and sanctions, considers interconnectivity and envisions beyond borders.

Building Bridges @ Moca, Tehran, Iran, fall 2007

The first Building Bridges Rooftop Reflection manifested spontaneously, as an extension of the exhibition Marjan Vayghan curated at Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Arts. The exhibit opened during the fall of 2007, featuring works from 67 Iranian and American artists (including works from Bill Viola, Farideh Lashaee, Suzanne Lacy, Abbas Kiarostami, Masami Teraoka, .... )

Although the exhibit “Manifestations of Contemporary Arts in Iran,” included 67 Artists and recruited more participants, Building Bridges began it’s Film Festival as a means of including works by additional artists, participants and collaborators. Most of the works showcased in the original screenings were by LA Art Girls as well as works by artist and collaborators from the One Million Signature Group.

What started as a side project increase suddenly and rapidly, after the One Million Signature Group held their Largest Rally to date on the Museum grounds at Park-e-Laleh.

The first series of Building Bridges Screenings were held at Park-e-Laleh after Museum hours. As the restrictions on Art and communication tightened, we began taking our message to the rooftops of Tehran.

The late night screenings were sparked over a conversation in the Women’s bathroom of MOCA Tehran, with a young university art student that had recently joined the One Million Signature Group. The screenings originally titled Building Bridges Film Festival began to take shape at Park-e-Laleh after Museum Hours and slowly started a life of their own as they took over rooftops of Tehran and Los Angeles.
